Here you see a 450 sq ft deck railing and pergola added to the top of an unused flat rubber roof above a garage. The railing is painted the same color as the fence with black spindles to allow for an open feel. The pergola is coated with a UV resistant natural tone stain to keep the natural cedar look and keep it from turning grey after a year or so of sun exposure. The garage width is about 16' so I needed to reinforced the joists with construction grade 2x10's. The posts for the railing and the pergola were attached with the help of my 6 year old son with lag screws into the side of the rim joists.
